Quote of the Day
Old Hollow Tree@OldHollowTree (November 7, 2023)Good morning. It is the 7th of November. Our daughter, overcome with an overwhelming literary fever, awoke around five o’clock this morning wanting to read Owl Moon by
@JaneYolen. With respect to Ms. Yolen, I had other priorities.I wanted to make coffee, I wanted to shower, I wanted to step outside into the bare November dawn and listen to the cold quiet. November, however, offers a clarity. The trees, having been stripped of their leaves by the frost, retain only their core structure. The animals that stay seek the warmth of burrow and den. The wooly bears have hidden deep in the wood pile to sleep through the long winter. November reveals what is fundamental, what is necessary, what actually matters. And so I happily read Owl Moon with my daughter (twice), hooting the call of the great horned owl together as the sun rose, as the grey November light began to warm our meadow and offer a clarity, an insight into what truly matters.
