LGBTQ+ Rights: Intersections Matter

LGBTQ+ Rights: Intersections Matter September 19, 2023

LGBTQ+ rights and politics are more than just buzzwords – they’re part of a larger tapestry that weaves together various aspects of our lives. It’s important to untangle the web of connections surrounding LGBTQ+ rights, and shine some light on ways we can learn more, and do more about these issues that intersect with other parts of lives.

1. Different Struggles, Shared Ground: Race and Ethnicity The LGBTQ+ community is as diverse as the colors of the rainbow, with members from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. As we explore the challenges unique to LGBTQ+ individuals of different origins, we will discover the importance of recognizing the intersection of race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.

2. Beyond Labels: Gender Identity and Expression Meet and get to know transgender and non-binary individuals, whose stories teach us about more than just gender. Their experiences expand our understanding of gender equality and societal norms, showing how the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is intertwined with the broader conversation on gender.

3. Faith and Identity: Navigating the Intersection Religion and LGBTQ+ rights often stand at the crossroads. Because false religious teachings and beliefs cause so much harm to this community, it is critical that we deconstruct our faith, and learn about diverse perspectives within different faith communities and how they influence the ongoing dialogue around LGBTQ+ acceptance.

4. Minds Matter: LGBTQ+ Mental Health Faith-based family rejection is the root cause of depression, self-harm, and suicide. Mental health is a vital but often overlooked part of the LGBTQ+ experience. As we learn, as we grow, as we share, we discover the depth of the challenges they face, and we shed light on the urgent need for better mental healthcare that respects their unique struggles.

5. Growing Up LGBTQ+: Education and Support School should be a safe space for everyone. As we learn about the hurdles LGBTQ+ youth face, such as bullying and discrimination, we can help shape a more inclusive and accepting education environment. It is also critical that we become active in school associations and school boards – many without a single affirming voice.

6. Seeking Equity: LGBTQ+ Healthcare Access to proper healthcare isn’t equal for everyone. We can dive into learning about the disparities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, especially the transgender community, and increase our understanding of the importance of equal and compassionate medical care. This will help us stand up against the anti-LGBTQ and anti-trans legislation that would deny this community their rights in this area.

7. Lights, Camera, Acceptance: LGBTQ+ Representation in Media From movies to sports, LGBTQ+ representation matters. Watch, support, review, spread the word. Seeing LGBTQ+ individuals in these spheres challenges stereotypes and promotes inclusivity.

8. Laws and Progress: Navigating the Legal Landscape Stay up-to-date on the legal changes affecting LGBTQ+ rights – on a local, state and federal level. There is so much false narrative, so many lies coming from those who are anti-gay and anti-trans. It is important we stay informed with truth so we fully understand recent shifts and potential threats. This will help empower us to be informed advocates.

9. Allies in Action: Support Organizations You Believe In  There is great power in allyship. Support nonprofit organizations working in this area with your time and your finances.

LGBTQ+ rights are like a puzzle with many pieces, connecting with race, gender, faith, and more. By learning more about these intersections, we move beyond the surface and see how LGBTQ+ issues are part of a bigger picture, and why they are critically important to creating a loving, kind, inclusive, accepting future.
